The Classic Car Owner’s Guide to Insurance

Owning a classic car is a lifelong dream for many car lovers. When the day finally comes to drive your dream car home, you’ll want to make sure your new investment is protected. But just as owning and caring for a classic car is completely different from normal car ownership, standard car insurance policies won’t provide the coverage you need. You’ll have to purchase a specific classic car insurance policy.

Classic car insurance is designed to meet the unique needs of classic car owners, while providing less coverage in areas that commuter cars need. Whether or not a vehicle meets the definition of a classic car may be up to the provider, however typically these vehicles are at least 25 years old, have a current value higher than their original purchase price, and require custom or rare parts. Classic car coverage includes antique cars over 45 years old and vintage cars, which can be up to 100 years old. It’s also the best type of policy for collector cars that spend more time in storage or on display than being driven.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are these vehicles legal?

How do I register these vehicles?

How do I register these vehicles?

Yes, all vehicles we offer for sale have been legally imported to the USA and they conform to all the rules and regulations. All vehicles imported fall under federal regulation of the 25-year-old rule, as such, they are exempt from Federal DOT and EPA regulations allowing them to be lawfully imported, registered and titled in the USA (hence why all of our vehicles are sold with a clean & clear DMV NC Title). They have passed all Department of Transport, Environmental Protection Agency, Customs & Border Patrol inspections and are 100% legally here in the USA.

How do I register these vehicles?

How do I register these vehicles?

All vehicles have been titled with the NC DMV and they will be sold with a clean and clear NC title. With title in hand, you will register the vehicle just like any other used vehicle purchase. The buyer is responsible and liable for registering the vehicle in their home State. They must satisfy all applicable State registration requirements, including, but not limited to, vehicle registration/title fees, safety certification, sales tax, repairs to meet State inspection and transfer of ownership.

Whats an MOT?

How do I register these vehicles?

Why are Defenders so expensive?

An MOT test (Ministry of Transport) is an annual test of vehicle safety, roadworthiness, emissions required for all vehicles in the United Kingdom. All vehicles in the United Kingdom must have pasted an MOT test to be road legal. The decision to pass or fail each presented vehicle comes down to these following guidelines. The MOT test covers, lighting, signaling equipment, steering (including suspension), brakes, tires and wheels, seat belts, body, structure, chassis (rust) and general items. Also including body and components such as spoilers, bumpers and mirror housings, exhaust, fuel and emissions. All our vehicles imported come with a British MOT certificate of roadworthiness and safety, a significantly higher standard than any USA inspection.

Why are Defenders so expensive?

Why are Defenders so expensive?

Why are Defenders so expensive?

It’s basic supply and demand. With so few models produced and available for sale in the U.S. market (and the Defender being one of the coolest and now iconic cars on the planet) they are a desirable vehicle to own. With production of these vehicles now over, they are now a worthy investment. Defenders have proven to hold their value exceptionally well. We try to keep our Defenders original and accessible for everyone to enjoy.  Our inventory is stocked with a variety of model years, engine types, conditions, optional extras and specifications and are all priced accordingly.

Are parts available?

Why are Defenders so expensive?

Can you ship my dream vehicle?

Yes! With around 2 million Defenders produced and 70 percent still on the road, parts are still readily available. These are simple machines and simple engines to maintain and with almost zero electronics there is less to brake or fail. Most local mechanics find these vehicles easy to work on and when you need help with parts or accessories just contact us and we can certainly help you.

200TDI/300TDI ENGINE INFO

LAND ROVER ENGINES

Land Rover engines can be considered efficient in the 4x4 world. Since the 200Tdi in 1990, Land Rover engines have had decent performance and reliability when compared their predecessors. The engines in later years went through a variety of redesigns due to company buyouts, regulations, and improvements; but the biggest change came with the Td5 - moving away from purely mechanical engines. Most engines in Land Rovers are diesel, due to their better pulling power at lower RPM and better reliability in wading situations.

Engines used by the British company Land Rover in its 4×4 vehicles have included 4-cylinder petrol engines, and 4-cylinder and 5-cylinder diesel engines. Land Rover have also used various 4-cylinder, V8 engines and V6 engines developed by other companies. Initially the engines used were modified versions of standard Rover car petrol engines, but the need for dedicated in-house units was quickly realized. The first engine in the series was the 2-litre diesel of 1957, and this design was improved, expanded, and modified over several versions, culminating in the 300Tdi of 1994, which ceased production in 2006. Over 1.2 million engines in the series have been built.

Production of these engines originally took place at Rover's satellite factory (and ex-Bristol Hercules engine plant) at Acocks Green in Birmingham whilst vehicle assembly took place at the main Rover works at Solihull. After Land Rover was created as a distinct division with British Leyland in 1979 production of Rover cars at Solihull ceased in 1982. A new engine assembly line was built in the space vacated by the car lines and engine production started at Solihull in 1983.The engine line at Solihull closed in 2007 when Land Rover began using Ford and Jaguar engines built at Dagenham (diesel engines) and Bridgend (petrol engines).

200Tdi Engine - Turbo Direct Injection (pictured right)

Years produced: 1990 - 1994

Engine Codes: 11L, 12L and 13L

Layout: 4-cylinder, in-line

Power: 107hp (80kW)

Torque: 188lb/ft (255N/m)

Miles Per Gallon: 27 to 30 mpg

Fuel: Diesel

Capacity: 2495cc (2.5 liters)

The 200Tdi was one of the first mass-produced small-capacity direct-injection diesels, with the attendant improvements in power and efficiency that system brings. The 200Tdi name derives from the lb/ft torque it provided in the Discovery 1 (the true figure was actually 195 lb/ft), T for turbo, D for direct injection, and I for inter-cooled. The 200Tdi was Land Rover’s first direct injection engine and producing efficiency and emissions gains at the expense of combustion noise. The new aluminum cylinder head helped with combustion noise while its lighter weight helped emissions levels. A new Bosch injection system gave improved running characteristics and better starting. The improved Garrett T25 turbocharger provided boost pressure but this time, boosted air was fed via an intercooler, adding further to combustion efficiency to provide increased performance and/or fuel economy according to the driver’s approach.

The 200Tdi engine was fitted to Defenders in late 1990 and it has established itself in the Land Rover community as one of their best engines for its versatility and robust nature. It had 105bhp, which may not sound like much power today for a heavy 4×4 but back then it was more than respectable, and features such as direct fuel injection, which was considered advanced. This last gave the Defender a welcome kick up the backside, elevating performance from painful and plodding to something approaching respectable that allowed the Defender to cruise comfortably at highway speeds. Fuel economy was improved in the process. The added oomph made it better suited to towing, too. Any pre-1990 engine is unfortunately very gutless and lacks the power it needs to be used and enjoyed with everyday traffic and to keep up with highway speeds. This engine finally allowed the Defender to cruise comfortably at highway speeds, as well as tow heavy loads speedily on hills while still being economical. It is as a powerful and long-lived unit that with proper maintenance can exceed 300,000 miles. Which has made this a highly desired engine over the years. Its simplicity and ease of maintenance as well as being powerful and economical makes it ideal vehicle for off road adventures and to enjoy daily.

Some advantages include,

  • Huge all round performance and mpg improvement
  • Still fixable in the field
  • DIY-friendly
  • Unbreakable if maintained and driven properly
  • Capable of more than a 300k+ miles
  • If neglected and worn out, it’ll keep on going, smoking and rattling
  • Great fuel economy - 27 to 30 mpg
  • Maintain highways speeds 65-75mph

300TDI Engine

300 Tdi Engine - Turbo Direct Injection (pictured left)

Years produced: 1994 - 2006

Engine Codes: 16L (non EGR), 23L (EGR), 24L (EGR Auto) Defender

Layout: 4 cylinder in-line

Power: 111 bhp (83 kW)

Torque: 195 lb/ft (264 N/m)

Fuel: Diesel

Capacity: 2495cc (2.5 litres)

The Land Rover 300Tdi engine was an evolution upon the earlier 200Tdi with many improvements and refinements for better on road performance. However, it has the same capacity and power as its predecessor and slightly worse fuel consumption, which has led some people to downgrade to the 200Tdi given the option. The early 300Tdis had premature timing belt failures resulting in catastrophic engine damage. Land Rover issued a repair kit which could easily rectify issues with guide pulley misalignment. Land Rover continued to make the 300Tdi alongside for the export market as 'Rest of the World' spec, where EU regulations were not applicable, and for the British Army who deemed the Electronic control unable to guarantee protection against Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) weapons. Since the 300Tdi engine is longer than the 200Tdi, the engine was moved further forward in the bay, requiring different engine mounts.

Designed with an identical bore and stroke, but with many new components including conrods and coolant pump, the 300Tdi engine had to meet further emissions requirements and needed to be much quieter than the outgoing 200Tdi. Injector and combustion changes involving another new design of cylinder head and pistons, plus a revised exhaust manifold and turbocharger characteristics, partly addressed the emissions concerns and sound levels. Engine noise level was further suppressed by a new acoustic engine cover. A Serpentine ancillary drivebelt replaced the multiplicity of belts of the 200Tdi. The 300Tdi has the same performance as the 200Tdi, though our performance figures shown here indicate a slight increase. This is because the 200Tdi was slightly detuned for Defender as a marketing ploy to make the Discovery appear more upmarket. After the introduction of the Td5, the 300Tdi continued to be installed in military and overseas Defenders, eventually reaching a total of over a million units, including installations in Discovery 1, Range Rover and Ford utility vehicles.

Some advantages include,

  • Lower noise and vibration levels than the 200Tdi
  • Still fixable in the field, DIY friendly
  • Unbreakable if maintained and driven properly
  • Capable of more than a 300k+ miles
  • If neglected and worn out, it would keep on going, but become noisier
  •  Slightly cheaper to service than the 200Tdi
  • Great fuel economy - 27 to 30 mpg
  • Maintain highways speeds 70-80mph
